The confusion over what identification is and will be, accepted for domestic flights within the USA is such that experts recommend that the 54% of US citizens who do not currently have passports get them, quickly.
Obviously, Americans have long needed passports for international travel, but now they will need “real ID” for domestic flights too. Some say this will come to pass by October 2020.
In 2005, Congress passed the Real ID Act. In response to the 9/11 attacks, the Real ID Act created new security standards for States’ drivers’ licenses and IDs. Although the Department of Homeland Security says 47 out of 50 States are currently Real ID-compliant, only 27% of Americans have been issued a Real ID at this time.
Getting a Real ID driver’s license can be complicated. It could well be much quicker to simply to get a passport!
